Joseph Dale Oglesby

Joseph Dale Oglesby “Joe”, 78, of Bessemer, AL received his heavenly promotion on May 4, 2024. Joe succumbed to a brief battle with cancer at his home, surrounded by family and a few close friends. Joe graduated from Bessemer High School in 1963. He proudly served in the United States Army Reserves for 6 years. Joe worked as an Insurance Claims Specialist throughout his career and also later served in a role as legal liaison for the company in cases ranging from medical malpractice to various types of workplace discrimination/harassment; he retired from Traveler’s Insurance Company in 2006. After retirement, Joe enjoyed spending time with family and friends. Throughout his life, he faithfully honored his Heavenly Father by serving as a deacon, Sunday School teacher, Royal Ambassadors leader and served on various committees in the churches of which he was a member; he also served as a Gideon, speaking at various churches and handing out Bibles, as well as being a long-time volunteer at The Grace Place. He was a member of Flint Hill Baptist Church. Joe also coached boys sports over the years (Upwards Basketball) and was a football referee (pee wee, Jr. High and High School). If you knew Joe, you knew that he loved his wife, his children and his grands and his great grand beyond measure! (And you knew he loved the Alabama Crimson Tide- Roll Tide!!). Having a great sense of humor, Joe loved to laugh and to bring joy to those around him. He was a peace maker of sorts, yet he would stand firm beside his convictions and stand up for the teachings of The Bible, even if it was not the current “popular” feeling or belief among all he knew. Joe is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Freddie Lucas Oglesby; children Melissa Oglesby Richmond (Gerald) and Michele Oglesby Freeman (Doyce); grandchildren Luke Freeman (Briley), Mallory Richmond, Landon Freeman, Joseph Richmond and great grandchild Thomas Freeman. He was preceded in death by parents Clarence and Lorene Oglesby; brothers Donald Oglesby and Jerome Oglesby. Funeral service will be held on Thursday, May 9, 2024 at 2:00 PM at McCalla Memorial Funeral Home located at 4780 Letson Farms Parkway, McCalla, AL 35111. Visitation will begin from 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM Burial to follow at Valhalla Cemetery in Midfield, Alabama.
