Don R. Caldwell

Don R. Caldwell went to sleep at his home and woke up with Jesus Thursday morning, May 3, 2018. He is survived by his wife, Marie Caldwell, who he honored and loved for 68 years. He is also survived by 4 children - Donna (Norman) Speakman, Diane (Dave) Snyder, Denise Tubb, and Dan (Janie) Caldwell; his daughter/niece - Kaye (Danny) Watts; 9 grandchildren – Erik (Drew) Speakman, Tim Speakman, Stephanie (Jason) Musgrove, Kayla (Scott) Tucker, Chad (Leah) Clem, Amy (Todd) Hendrix, Stacia (Mike) Barnes, Savanna and Allyssa Carroll. He was also blessed with 19 cherished great grandchildren - Joel Musgrove, Shaina Valdes, Sydney Musgrove, Emily Clem, Shelby Valdes, Bryce Speakman, Andrew Clem, Sara Kate Speakman, Harper Hendrix, Eliana Clem, Hollins Speakman, Camp Hendrix, Ann Langston Hendrix, Griffin Speakman, Jack Hendrix, Shepherd Speakman, Justin Barnes, Dakota Barnes, and Shelby Barnes. Don was born December 10, 1928 in Sprott, Alabama into a family where he was number 10 of 11 children. He was preceded in death by his parents Walter Banks Caldwell and Josie Langston Caldwell, and his 10 siblings. He retired in 1980 after working 33 years at U.S. Steel. He was a builder, carpenter, fisherman, and gardener. He grew up roaming, hunting and fishing in the woods near the Cahaba River at Riverbend. He raised his children to love God’s beautiful creation and made many memories swimming, fishing and hiking with them; many times at the Cahaba River. He was baptized into the kingdom of God in that same river on Father’s Day, June 22, 2015. He attended and was a member of Grace Life Baptist Church. He leaves behind a legacy of endurance, faith and integrity. Visitation for friends and family will be from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM on Wednesday, May 9th and from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM on Thursday, May 10th at McCalla Memorial Funeral Home. A memorial service will follow at 11:00 AM. He will be laid to rest at Shoultz Creek Church Cemetery in West Blocton, AL immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Don’s name to Alabama Children’s Hospital Foundation, designation children’s cancer and blood disorders
