Wilson Wood Jr., 94 years old, of McCalla Alabama passed away February 14 th , 2026. He was fondly known as Charlie by his close friends and family. Funeral service will be held at McCalla Memorial Funeral Home located at 4780 Letson Farms Parkway in McCalla, Alabama 35111 on Friday, February 20 th . Visitation for friends of Charlie and his family will be from 12 noon until 1:00pm with the service to follow. Graveside service for the family members will be at Forest Grove Funeral Home and Cemetery, 1498 5 th Avenue, Pleasant Grove, Alabama 35127. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to your favorite charity. Wilson is pre-deceased by his wife of 63 years, Lillian (Granny to most), who passed 13 years ago also on February 14 th . He is also pre-deceased by his parents, Wilson Wesley Wood and Katie Nations Wood; his siblings Hazel Vaughn (Frank), Azilee Nolen, Margaree Wood, Willie Ruth Preston (Curtis), Bobby Ray (known as Pete), and Barbara Ann Willis (Duke). He is survived by his 5 children, Jerry Ray (Sandy), Charlotte Crumpton (Dave), Byron Keith (Wendy), Mark Allen, Lynn Denise Schoener Fields, and his sister-in-law Linda Miller Woods. During his lifetime he and Granny were blessed with nine grandchildren, Matthew Crumpton (Jennifer), Katie Crumpton, Jeremy Wood (Amanda), Daniel Wood (Ashley), Christopher Wood (Nicole), Amanda Wood, Ryan Wood, Blake Schoener, and Regan Schoener Wilson (Blaine). He was subsequently blessed with and cherished dearly 8 great grandchildren, Anthony and Sean Crumpton, Sloane and Nora Wood, Avery and Thomas Wood, and Riley and Saylor Wilson. He came into this world as a farmer’s son, born at home in Blount County near Hulaco, Alabama. His fondest memories revolved around his adventures riding horses across the county. At age 19 years, he enlisted in the US Army on May 13, 1949, serving in the Korean War as a Private 1 st Class. He was honorably discharged with a Bronze Star on August 8, 1952, returning home to marry the love of his life, Lillian Johnson, on March 8, 1952, to begin his family. They moved around a bit before settling in Hueytown, Alabama where their children were raised. He worked various jobs as a milk man, sheetrock worker, and brick mason until he joined PEMCO Aeroplex in Birmingham, Alabama where he retired in 1994. Wilson and Lillian then moved to McCalla, Alabama so they could enjoy large open spaces and get back to their love of horses. Over the next 30 years, he always kept a barn full of horses, teaching any willing grandchild to ride, feed and care for them. When he could no longer ride, he loved to watch his 3 current horses, Buck, Levi, and Dixie, graze and run around the pasture from the leisure of his front porch while smoking his favorite cigars. He was a cowboy at heart and will be remembered lovingly as the BEST DAD and BEST PAWPAW EVER!
