Doris DeRoncey Muir of McCalla died on October 2 at the age of 92. She was born March 12, 1927 in Birmingham, Alabama. One of seven children, Doris attended Graymont Elementary and graduated from Phillips High School. After graduation, she worked as a secretary for the W.B. Leedy Insurance Company. In 1949, Doris married Norman E. (Ed) Muir and the young couple joined Hunter Street Baptist Church where they remained faithful members until their deaths. During her 28-year career with the Birmingham City School System, Doris served as Educational Secretary at Hemphill Elementary. Doris is preceded in death by her beloved husband of 56 years Ed Muir; parents Joe and Estelle DeRoncey; brothers Bob and Jack DeRoncey; sisters Margaret Burks and Mary Jo Ledbetter. She is survived by her son Norman Muir (Sandra); daughters Donna Muir Evans (Bruce) and Janet Muir Peine (David); and sister Patricia Coots of Atlanta. Doris was affectionately known as “Nonna” to her 8 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Her life was defined by her Christian faith and her love of family. A celebration of life service will be held in the Chapel at Hunter Street Baptist Church at 2PM on Monday, October 7th with visitation for family and friends beginning at 1PM. Interment will follow at Elmwood Cemetery. To honor Doris’ long career working with children, gifts in her honor may be directed to The Big Oak Ranch, P.O.
