Sarah Ann Huchko Garner

Sarah Ann Huchko Garner, age 88, of Bessemer, passed away April 30, 2025 at UAB West Medical Center. She was a faithful wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was retired as a school bus driver with the Shelby County School System, a job she dearly loved and where she made many lifelong friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Steve Huchko and Helen Huchko, her sister, Narcy Huchko, her brother, Steve Huchko, Jr., her husband, Charlie Lewis Garner, and her son, Charles Steven Garner.Survivors include her daughter, Peggy S. McKnight (Eddy) of Tuscaloosa, daughter-in-law, Terri Garner of Bibb County, sister, Glenda Skowronski of Baldwin County, Brother-in-law, Larry Garner (Sandy) of Maylene, grandchildren: Ashley Habrial (Jon) of Magnolia Texas, Aaron McKnight of Tuscaloosa, Michael McKnight (Natalie) of Montgomery, Linda Link of Birmingham, great-grandchildren: Katie Link, Charlotte Habrial, Lucas Habrial, Arielle “Maddie” Taylor, Lucy McKnight, and many nephews and nieces. Sarah was known as an excellent cook with fantastic fried chicken and she had delicious recipes for all the wild game brought in by her husband and son. She was best known for her nut roll which was a favorite at Christmas time when she would bake dozens of them to give away to family, friends, and co-workers. Before becoming bed-bound a number of years ago, Sarah enjoyed serving as a record-keeper for the Sunday School classes at South Crest Baptist Church. She also enjoyed working with plants. Her green-thumb reputation often had people bringing her cuttings from plants or the actual plant that was not doing well for which she would put her tender care to work. Pallbearers will be Eddie Garner, Joey Garner, Sonny Garner, Matthew Wallace, Aaron McKnight, and Michael McKnight. Honorary pallbearers will be the staff and residents of Diversicare Nursing Home in Bessemer. The family would like to acknowledge the excellent care given to Sarah in her last days of life by the very caring nurses, doctors, and staff of UAB West Medical Center. Visitation will be at 10:00AM Monday, May 5, 2025, for one hour with the funeral service to follow immediately at 11: 00AM at McCalla Memorial Funeral Home with Pastor Larry Bonner of Hayden, Alabama officiating
